History of MD Anderson Cancer Center

MD Anderson Cancer Center has a long history in Houston, Texas. The center was created in 1941 after the Texas Legislature approved a plan to build a cancer hospital and research center.

The center was named after Monroe D. Anderson, a Houston businessman and philanthropist. The MD Anderson Foundation helped bring the new cancer center to Houston.

In 1942, MD Anderson started in a temporary location near downtown Houston. The first patient was treated there in March 1944.

The center moved to its permanent home in the Texas Medical Center in 1954. This move gave MD Anderson more space for patient care, cancer research and medical education.

Another important year was 1971. MD Anderson became one of the first three cancer centers in the country to receive a comprehensive cancer center designation under the National Cancer Act.

Over the years, MD Anderson continued to grow. It added more cancer treatment, research and patient services. Today, the main campus is still in the Texas Medical Center in Houston, with other locations around the Houston area.
