A powerful Northeast US nor’easter storm brought coastal flooding, strong winds, heavy rain and major travel disruptions on Saturday, Sept. 26, affecting communities from Virginia to Maine. The National Weather Service warned of dangerous coastal conditions, while New York and New Jersey declared states of emergency in affected areas.
More than 100,000 households were without power across the Northeast, while thousands of flights were delayed or canceled. Flooding was reported in coastal parts of New Jersey, including Surf City and Manasquan.

Coastal flooding affected several communities in New Jersey.

The storm also caused widespread power outages. More than 100,000 customers, mostly in the Northeast, had lost electricity, according to the outage tracker PowerOutage.
In Brooklyn, a man was killed after a falling tree struck him during the storm. CBS New York reported that the incident happened in East New York near Euclid Avenue and Linden Boulevard.
Travel and Flight Disruptions
The storm also created major problems for air travel.
The Federal Aviation Administration advised passengers to check directly with their airlines for flight updates. More than 2,400 flights were delayed and another 1,199 were grounded, according to FlightAware.
Drivers and pedestrians in affected areas were also warned about flooded roads and dangerous travel conditions.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and warned people not to drive or walk through floodwater.
Events Canceled or Rescheduled
The Northeast US nor’easter storm also affected sports and entertainment events.
In the Boston area, the Red Sox changed plans for the final game of their series against the Chicago Cubs.
A professional football match between Red Bull New York and St. Louis City SC was canceled.
New York City’s Global Citizen Festival, which was scheduled to feature Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean and John Legend at Central Park, was also called off.
Ed Sheeran’s concert at Gillette Stadium in the Boston area was canceled because of the weather. The stadium said the decision was made for safety reasons.
