HOUSTON, Texas — Milby High School football is counting on senior wide receivers Isaiah Washington and Artavion Davis as the Buffs move through the second half of the season and work toward getting past the first round of the playoffs. Washington and Davis are two of the senior players expected to help lead that effort. Their connection at wide receiver gives the team another way to create opportunities on the field.
Washington said the two receivers can help each other when defenses focus on one side. If one receiver draws extra attention, the other can have an opportunity to make a play.
A Standout Senior Season
Davis has become an important part of the team through his work on the field and his approach to the game. He said he enjoys winning, helping his team and building confidence through hard work.
Davis also showed his toughness last season. He broke his thumb during the first half of Milby’s opening game but continued to play. Junior quarterback Gabriel Gutierrez said he did not learn about the injury until about two weeks later because Davis kept playing through it.
Davis finished the regular season with 1,602 receiving yards, the most regular-season receiving yards in Texas. He said he tries to stay humble, keep God first and avoid letting his success change his approach.
Coach Matthew Puente said Davis continues to put in extra work and has become someone other players can look up to.
Now, Davis and Washington are helping lead the Buffs through the second half of the season. The two senior receivers are looking to help Milby reach the playoffs while setting an example for the younger players on the team.
Puente said having players like Washington and Davis in leadership roles can help the younger players as they continue to develop.
