Career History

Sauce Gardner’s football career started in Detroit and quickly moved to the national stage. He played both wide receiver and defensive back at Martin Luther King Jr. Senior High School before choosing the University of Cincinnati.

At Cincinnati, Gardner became one of the team’s key defensive players. He played from 2019 to 2021 and finished his college career with nine interceptions. His 2021 season was especially important as Cincinnati reached the College Football Playoff. Gardner was also named AAC Defensive Player of the Year and a consensus All-American.

The New York Jets selected Gardner with the fourth overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. He started all 17 games as a rookie and finished the season with 75 tackles, two interceptions and 20 passes defended. He was named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and first-team All-Pro.

Early Life

Sauce Gardner was born Ahmad Gardner on August 31, 2001, in Detroit, Michigan. Football became an important part of his life at a young age.

He attended Martin Luther King Jr. Senior High School in Detroit, where he played both wide receiver and defensive back. Playing both sides of the ball helped him develop skills with the ball in his hands as well as skills in coverage.

Gardner helped his high school team win a state championship in 2018. He was also named a first-team All-State player that year.

After high school, Gardner chose Cincinnati for his college football career. He entered college as a three-star recruit and developed into one of the top defensive backs in the program.

College / Youth Career

Gardner played college football for the Cincinnati Bearcats from 2019 through 2021.

He made an immediate impact as a freshman in 2019. Gardner played in 14 games, including six starts, and finished with 31 tackles, 11 passes defended and three interceptions. Two of those interceptions were returned for touchdowns.

In 2020, he continued as a starting defensive back and helped Cincinnati build one of the stronger defenses in college football.

His best college season came in 2021. Gardner recorded 40 tackles, three sacks, three interceptions and seven passes defended. He was named AAC Defensive Player of the Year and a consensus All-American.

Cincinnati also made college football history that season by becoming the first Group of Five team to reach the College Football Playoff.

Gardner finished his Cincinnati career with nine interceptions and became one of the most highly regarded cornerback prospects heading into the 2022 NFL Draft.

Professional Career

The New York Jets selected Sauce Gardner with the fourth overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. He entered the NFL as a first-round cornerback and quickly became a starter.

In his rookie season, Gardner started all 17 games. He recorded 75 tackles, two interceptions and 20 passes defended. His performance earned him the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award, a Pro Bowl selection and first-team All-Pro honors.

Gardner continued his strong play in 2023. He started 16 games and recorded 57 tackles, 12 passes defended and one forced fumble. He was again selected to the Pro Bowl and named first-team All-Pro.

In 2024, Gardner played 15 games and finished with 49 tackles, nine passes defended, one interception and one sack.

During the 2025 season, Gardner started seven games for the Jets before being traded to Indianapolis. He recorded 20 tackles and six passes defended for New York. After the trade, he appeared in four games for the Colts and added 16 tackles and three passes defended.

The 2025 season also brought another major honor. Pro Football Focus named Gardner a first-team All-Pro after his first season with Indianapolis.
